    What are Thespians?

At Elgin School the “Drama Club,” is actually a charter troupe of the International Thespian Honor Society. Some schools refer to it as ITS or Thespy.  Thespians are Actors, performers, musicians, dancers, techies, artist who share a love of the theatre.  Thespians by definition are ACTORS as Thespis was considered to be the First ACTOR.  This is an honor society, therefore true membership requires points earned toward membership and induction ceremony at the end of the year.  HOWEVER-students should get involved by attending meetings right away.  If you love the idea of being on or around the stage, join THESPIANS!  Again, this IS our drama club!  We are a family.  YOU WILL be welcomed!  You will be appreciated!  You will find friends here!  We are an educational society dedicated to encouraging and improving the skills of theatre students.  Please find the website for additional information.  www.texasthespians.org

The best part?  Thespian Convention-This is a life changing experience for many kids.  And most kids want to return after graduation, but . . . they can’t.  L

    Texas State THESPIAN FESTIVAL 2013!

Texas Thespian’s State Festival is an annual conference in which close to three thousand students interested in the art of theatre from all across Texas come together for 4 solid days packed with workshops, contests, shows, events, and fun!  There are college recruiters and guest artists from around the world! Our Students typically compete in TIES or Texas Individual Events.  These are called “individual events,” but in fact most are group events. We plan to take a play for play marathon called COMPETITION PIECE.  Auditions for this show will be held in September. We compete in around 20 events.  Events are but not limited to the following:  Solo acting, Duet acting, group acting, solo musical, duet musical, and group musical, Texas techie, set design, costume design, make-up design, super techie, mask making, etc.  For more information please go to http://www.texasthespians.org/index.php/state-festival

When and Where is it?                                                                                       Texas Thespian State Festival
November 21, 2013, 12:00 pm – November 23, 2013, 10:00 pm.  We will leave on the 20th because we will be competing and performing and we will return Sunday afternoon, unless we do not raise enough money to cover the 4th night at the hotel.

    Where
Dallas Convention Center & Omni Hotel
    555 South Lamar Street
    Dallas, Texas 75234 USA

Festival Costs:   They are so expensive!  Please go to the website to see all of the fees so that you know that I am doing my very best to keep the price as low as possible.  There only 3 meals included this year.  And the Omni does not include breakfast like Embassy Suites.  More money is needed at convention by each student than in previous years just so the students can eat.  We will request refrigerators in the rooms but there is no guarantee that they will be available for each room.  But I strongly encourage snacks to be packed to eat there.

I am estimating $525.  $400 paid to Texas Thespians through EISD HS DRAMA and $125 for spending money.  You may start making payments at any time, right away, the final payment of the full $400 is due by:  OCTOBER 11 so that I have enough time to get the check to Texas Thespians before the deadline!  CHECKS need to be made out to EISD HS DRAMA and I send ONE check to Texas Thespians.

Money paid to go on this trip is NON REFUNDABLE.  Texas Thespians does not give it back, so I cannot give it back.  Students must be passing by UIL standards to go on the trip.  If he or she fails, the money is still NOT refundable!  And the last grading period is 1 week before we leave.

We will do fundraising but please keep in mind that we must cover the following:

    Troupe fees.

Contest Fees-so many contests, so many fees!

    Royalty fees.

    Audition fees if applicable.

Food on Wednesday night-Traditionally PF CHANGS.

Pizza Saturday night after the convention closes for Circle.

One sit down meal on Sunday on the way home from Dallas.

    Transportation, parking, sponsors.

Money to stage the show and contests.

Miscellaneous things like food throughout the rehearsal process.

IMPORTANT NOTE-While each student must actively participate in the entire festival, not every student will be in cast in the play or entered in a contest.  The experience alone is worthy of the effort and money spent to go.  In fact I only started taking shows to convention in the last few years.  So please do not deny your child this opportunity if they miss auditions or do not get cast in the play.  The show is one tiny part of the overall experience.  The friends made, the workshops, the “a-ha” moments, and the joy of being around people who share a common bond is truly educational beyond anything I can present in a classroom.

If your child is a sophomore or junior and this is NOT his or her first experience with the festival and he or she would like to run for student state board, please let me know ASAP so that we can get that ball rolling!
