Welcome to Mr. Forman's ELA Homepage!
Dear EMS Wildcat Parents,
My name is Matthew Forman, and I am your scholar’s English Language Arts teacher for the 2018 - 2019 school year. I am extremely excited to be here, and to be a part of your son’s or daughter’s education!
Please allow me to tell you a little about myself. I am a veteran of the United States Air Force, where I served as a Security Police Supervisor. I served in Belgium; Abilene, Tx; Turkey; and Rome, NY; and served four combat tours in the first Gulf War. After leaving the military in 1992, I was an investigator for the courts in New York and Pennsylvania, then became a truck driver in 1997. I owned my own trucking company from 1998 until 2008, when I entered Middle Tennessee State University to become a teacher. I student taught and apprenticed in schools in Tennessee, then taught for two years in Jackson, MS, two years in Bryan, TX (my wife and I got married, and she refused to move to Mississippi!), and am now starting my second year here at Elgin Middle School. We recently bought a home in Smithville, and I plan to stay here for as long as they let me!
I believe that it is my responsibility to help your scholar prepare for his or her future to the best of our abilities - mine and theirs. To that end, I will be pushing all of my charges to do their best work, and may well push them harder than they have been pushed before. Please understand that I am trying to prepare them not only for this year’s STAAR testing, but for continued success next year, in high school, and in life beyond, whether they go on to college, a trade school, or into the workforce. When you visit my classroom, one of the first things you will see is a sign that says, “In this classroom we don’t do ‘easy’; we make ‘easy’ happen through hard work and effort.” I fully endorse this philosophy in my classroom! If your son or daughter says, “Mr. Forman is mean,” or, “It’s too hard in his class,” I encourage you to come for a visit! I maintain an open door policy, and love to have parents observe our classroom!
Please check gradebook/Parent Portal on at least a weekly basis. In addition, a lot of assignments will be through Google Classroom, and I will be happy to give you access; simply email me and tell me your scholar’s name and class period, and I will send you an invitation (many of you should already have access, but if not, let me know!). Book projects, tests, and other projects will be major grades, while NewsELA, AR, in-class and homework assignments, and quizzes will be in with daily grades. There will be at least two major grades each 6 weeks, and at least 2 “minor” grades each week.
My conference period is from 8:10 to 9:15, and you may schedule a meeting with me by calling the main number at school, or, if you are dropping off your son or daughter, coming in and asking for me. I will make myself available by appointment after school as well. After school tutoring will be Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4:45, and other times can be scheduled if needed. Please join my “Remind” by texting kkdb7a if your scholar is in 7th grade, or @formanela if he or she is in 8th grade, to 81010. I will be sending at least one remind each week.

Scholastic Book Club! Parents, the best thing you can do for your scholar is to read to them, and have them read to you! Or to have them read to their siblings! To help them do so, I highly recommend books from Scholastic Books at Scholastic Book Club.com. When ordering, use CLASS CODE RMPGK.
