FAQs
- What is a Practicum?
- How do I earn an endorsement?
- What is an IBC?
- How do I choose a program?
- Can I change programs of study?
- What is the difference between Welding and P-Tech Welding?
What is a Practicum?
A practicum is the final course in a program of study that allows for hands-on, practical application of knowledge in skills in a variety of settings both in and out of the classroom. Practicum classes partner with local businesses and industries to allow for work-based experiences that are hands-on and either in the classroom, a lab setting, or industry settings. Not all programs offer practicum courses at this time, and not all practicum experiences look the same.
How do I earn an endorsement?
When you complete four or more credits within one program of study, you will earn an endorsement. Your counselor will work with you to ensure you complete the necessary coursework to earn an endorsement. There are three endorsements in Career and Technical Education: Business and Industry, Public Services, and STEM. This page lists the available programs and recommended sequence of courses for each CTE endorsement.
What is an IBC?
An industry based certification (IBC) is a professional certification that represents industry-valued skills that lead to employment and act as a springboard for higher levels for achievement to ensure students' independence and success in life beyond high school. Certifications offered in Elgin ISD are approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and recognized by industry leaders as relevant for each respective program of study.
How do I choose a program?
Discuss program options with your family and counselors to determine which program(s) may be best for you.
An online interest profiler, like o*net, may help you identify your unique skillset and careers that would be a good match for you.
Can I change programs of study?
What is the difference between Welding and P-Tech Welding?
P-Tech stands for "Pathways in Technology Early College High School". This program combines high school and college curriculum with workplace experiences to prepare students for successful careers in manufacturing related fields. The goal of P-Tech is to bridge the gap between education and industry, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the workforce upon graduating from high school.
The P-Tech Welding program is aligned with the Welding CTE program of study. Both programs offer the D1.1 and D9.1 AWS certifications and additionally, P-Tech students have the potential to earn a Level I welding certification and complete an Associates Degree while in the program.
