Early College High School (ECHS)

What is Early College High School?

Early College High School (ECHS) is a program that allows high school students to earn college credit while completing their high school requirements. ECHS is designed to provide students with an opportunity to experience college-level coursework and get a head start on their post-secondary education.

Key Features of Early College High School

  • Dual Enrollment: ECHS students take college courses alongside their high school classes, allowing them to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously. These college credits are transferable to other colleges and universities in the state of Texas.
  • College Readiness: The ECHS program is designed to prepare students for the academic rigors of college. They receive support and resources to succeed in college-level coursework, including study skills, time management, and access to college resources.
  • Targeted Populations: Early College High School targets students who may be underrepresented in higher education or students who are first-generation college-goers. This program aims to increase college access and success for students who may face barriers to higher education.
  • Affordability: Dual credit courses and textbooks are free for students in this program. ECHS provides a cost-effective way to accumulate college credits for students before graduating high school
  • College Degree or Certificate: The ECHS program provides students the opportunity earn an associate degree while still in high school, giving them a significant advantage when they continue their education at a four-year college.
  • Supportive Environment: The Elgin ECHS program provides additional support and guidance to help students navigate the college experience successfully. This includes academic advising, counseling, and mentorship.

ECHS has proven to be a successful model in increasing college access and success for students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. By blending high school and college experiences, Early College High Schools help students transition smoothly to higher education, saving time and money in the process.
