SMART tag

Elgin ISD uses the Secured Mobility Authorized Ridership Technology (SMART) tag system for all students who ride the bus to and from school. The SMART tag system is designed to increase the safety and security of students.

Each of our buses is outfitted with a tablet equipped with a Radio Frequency Identification reader, mobile connectivity, and Global Positioning System (GPS). Students eligible for transportation service are issued a SMART tag equipped with an RFID chip. The chip does not transmit a signal, students swipe the card over the RFID reader when they enter and exit the bus. The SMART tag system records when a student loads and unloads the bus, providing real-time information to the Transportation department and parents.

Introducing the SMART tag Parent App

The mobile SMART tag parent App lets you keep track of your student's bus-riding activity and receive alerts on the go. The app is available for iOS and Android devices.

Registration begins with the primary parent, which is the parent associated with the student in the school district's system. The primary parent must complete their app registration and confirm their student before any co-parent can register for them.

Co-parents who wish to register for a student must submit a request to the primary parent within the app. In cases where there's no response from the primary parent, the school district can review and approve.

Before registering, ensure you have the following information for at least one of your children, then review the SMART tag Parent App instructions.

The SMART tag Parent App replaced the SMART tag Parent Portal (web access) in 2024. Parents must download the Parent App in order to continue viewing student ridership activity. Call the Elgin ISD Transportation office at (512) 281-5751 if you need assistance.
